Pleasant Distractions

My apologies for the silence. I have a confession. I’ve been (pleasantly) distracted as I’m sure many have been the moment they started watching Descendants of the Sun. This is by far, the best drama I’ve ever seen; not to forget the stellar casting. When I realized that Song Hye Kyo was playing the lead, I knew I had to catch that drama. She’s such a versatile actress. It’s nice to see her as a feisty doctor and not the typical damsel in distress. And oh,…the flawless skin….how does she maintain it? She still looks so young. Cosmetics? Video editing? It’s also in this drama that Song Joong Ki’s popularity took a meteoric rise.

The screenwriters leave you wanting more and longing for the next week to see what will happen between the main characters, namely “Dr. Kang Mo-Yeon (played by Song Hye Kyo)” and “Captain Yoo Si-Jin (played by Song Joong Ki)”. The writers did a great job. This drama made me laugh, cry, laugh and cry…There are many hilarious scenes too and though the romantic scenes are few (it’s supposed to be categorized under romantic comedy right?) … those few scenes melted my heart.

You will fall in love with Captain Yoo even from the start and the interaction between Dr.Kang and Captain Yoo, their witty conversation is so entertaining.

Now I see things differently. I especially respect the women who are married to men in the army (navy, seals, airforce, special forces, police…) ;  it must be tough to not know the details on their whereabouts at times; or worse when their lives are lost in operations. They must be really independent and strong women but at the same time, it must really hurt when they lose their loved ones. One of my favourites scenes – …..

The Last 4 Episodes 애인있어요

I have been wondering how the writers will conclude this 50-episode drama. If you have been following this drama, you will know that most of the viewers are rooting for these two characters Jin Eon and Hae Gang to reunite. Heaven knows how much they’ve gone through. While waiting for the last 4 episodes, this is what I’m predicting will happen in the storyline. So I’ll now wait and see how far off the actual ending will be from my prediction.
Jin Eon’s father already died – so there’s nothing much to say about him. I’m not sure if the writers will elaborate on Yong Gi and the group that left for the US for medical treatment. I think the focus will be on Hae Gang (Ong Gi). With the cliffhanger in episode 46, I suspect Hae Gang will be jailed. Baek Seok, otherwise known as the “lighthouse” will work on getting her out of jail. Min Tae Seok, the evil brother-in-law will probably get caught and Jin Ri (Jin Eon’s sister) becomes crazy. Jin Eon waits for Hae Gang.
Alternatively, since Tae Seok is still alive but running/hiding from the police, his greed and unrepentant attitude might cause him to attempt at killing Hae Gang. Perhaps in an attempt to run away, the police might fire some shots and his wife Jin Ri acts as a human shield. She dies. He stops and gets caught in the end. Hae Gang still gets jailed because of what the nasty old man did. She refuses to let Jin Eon know what his father did because she doesn’t want him to run from her again. Jin Eon waits for her. After the time is served, they meet at their old house and start anew.
I don’t think the writers will separate Jin Eon and Hae Gang. At this moment, the viewers will probably be so mad. Things are getting interesting.

She Was Pretty (Review) -MBC

I’ve been watching Korean dramas for several years and I don’t come across many dramas (romantic comedy) that catch my attention except Fated To Love You, Full House, My Lovely Samsoon, Boys Over Flowers and now … She Was Pretty. I heard that it’s also called “She Was Beautiful”.

The leading actors were truly amazing.  I’ve seen other dramas where Hwang Jung Eum plays the female lead and she’s really quite versatile, if that’s the right word to use. I’ve seen her in all seriousness (lawyer Seo In Ae in Endless Love). So, this was totally refreshing. I’ve not seen her so goofy and clumsy.

Choi Si Won – when the teeny boppers were probably screaming his name, I was waiting for another Bae Yong Joon drama. I didn’t know that the character Kim Shin Hyuk was played by Choi Si Won. I really adore the character Kim Shin Hyuk and at times I wonder if Choi Si Won himself is like the character he plays. Because of Kim Shin Hyuk, I will never look at pickled radishes the same way again.

I can’t comment much on Park Seo Joon and Go Joon Hee since they are quite new (for me).

I will never look at pickled radishes the same way again

I will never look at pickled radishes the same way again

I enjoyed the series but I don’t appreciate the ending and was actually quite disappointed. I do get it that Hye Jin and Sung Joon will ultimately end up together. (The poster already tells you so.) However, I feel like almost there’s a closure for many of the characters… except Shin Hyuk – who happens to be my favourite character.

What you read below would be an alternate ending I would write out….

The long distance relationship between Hye Jin & Sung Joon felt unreal and too easy. Yes, I know that in the end, he couldn’t wait for an entire year but I think it would’ve been better if the one year period actually happens and she really gets to focus on her work. In the midst of that, Shin Hyuk returns from his travels. They meet. Shin Hyuk naturally still loves Hye Jin but he doesn’t cling to her. Hye Jin would begin to have doubts – wondering if she made the right decision. Suddenly she feels close to Shin Hyuk because both of them are writers. She’s afraid of telling Sung Joon her doubts. When Sung Joon finds out Shin Hyuk is back, he gets worried and comes back, selling his house, car and quitting his job in New York.

Having both Sung Joon and Shin Hyuk back in Seoul proved to be stressful to Hye Jin who then decided to go away for a while with Ha Ri. Both men told her that they were not going to pressure her. She meets Shin Hyuk to tell him that she’s actually very greedy. She wants him to remain in her life but she chooses Sung Joon as the man she will marry. He gives her a bear hug telling her that he understands. He then makes his “disappearing act” again.

At the wedding day, Sung Joon can see how troubled Hye Jin is. He pretty much figured out that she’s worried about Shin Hyuk. He asks her again if she wants to go through with the wedding. She said yes… They walk down the aisle. She looks around for Shin Hyuk but couldn’t find him. After the ceremony, as Sung Joon and Hye Jin were getting ready to leave the venue,… Shin Hyuk does what he’s been good at doing. He surprises her and she screams – feeling shocked and surprised, as usual. Then he hugs her and congratulates her.

Only You

So, it has been a stressful few days. I’m sure I’m not the only one getting all frustrated about having just 1 more episode to go on “She Was Pretty”. So many theories on the ending and I must say that I was really surprised that Shin Hyuk turns out to be the successful author that goes by the name “Ten”. There were so many lovey dovey scenes between Sung Joon and Hye Jin. I’m happy and unhappy at the same time about how the plot is coming. Just one more episode, I don’t know how else the story will be written in order to conclude. Frankly episode 15 felt really final.

Yes, I got teary eyed when Shin Hyuk said his goodbye to Hye Jin. Of course, the lyrics of the song “Only You” is also heartbreaking.

At first I was frustrated when Sung Joon failed to recognize Hye Jin. But now that they’re together, I totally feel for Shin Hyuk’s character.

For once, I wish the less “popular” guy could get the girl – or vice versa. I know a lot of viewers are rooting for Siwon’s character Shin Hyuk. I totally love that character. He’s so funny…in a good way.

And here’s the songs,…”Only You”, sung by Si Won himself.

Sometimes

So, I’ve been watching this Kdrama called “She was pretty”. This is one of the songs in the soundtrack of the drama. I love this song.

After having seen several dramas, I have this one big question. Why is it that the “first love” is usually the bestfriend in childhood?

Anyway, Hye Jin initially asked a favour from her close friend Ha Ri to pretend to be her because (I guess), she wasn’t confident enough to meet Sung Joon who has grown up to be a handsome young man. She didn’t see herself “pretty” enough. Of course, things got complicated because Ha Ri started to fall in love with Sung Joon and was sort of seeing him behind her back, still pretending to be Hye Jin. Meanwhile Sung Joon thought he was dating Hye Jin when he was pretty much being quite mean to the real Hye Jin at the work place. Anyway, there are 3 more episodes if you want to catch the series.

I had a thought when I was listening to the music. isn’t it painful to long for that person whom you know is out there, and yet you don’t know where. So, you search and search and when you think you’ve found him/her,… you realize that the one you found wasn’t really the one you were looking for. And perhaps some part of you even try to convince yourself that he/she’s the one because in a way, you’re tired of looking but you can’t deny the fact that he/she is more like a stranger to you.
